The army list books allow you to arm two of the Flames of War BA-64 with Anti Tank Rifles instead of the MG turret. Problem is, there are no models that allow for this. Fortunately, I had some old PTRD anti tank rifle models and sliced them out of their base and added a Neodymium magnet under it. Given that my vehicles are already magnetized to accept the self adhering turrets, they stay in place nicely. Had to do some touch up paint on the models, but overall the conversion was fairly quick. I wish I was the one that came up with the idea, but I copied it from a different blogger (Kages Flames of War). I still wish Battlefront sold all of the model options they publish.
I wonder how they will perform. The good thing about machine guns is that they work the same whether the vehicle moved or not. The Anti Tank Rifle doesn’t. More importantly, the heavier hitting (or less weak hitting) weapon motivates the player to use the recce vehicles in a way they are not necessarily supposed to be used – for attack, rather than recce. I may use them in large, 7 vehicle swarms, but I do not think I will use them when I just bring 4 vehicles.
As you can imagine, that left me out with one less base of anti tank rifles for the rest of the army, so I had to paint a new set, as the picture below. Not too bad – it adds some variety to the army. I also got a different painted set from the army trade I did with Adam so in the end I think I am set with Flames of War Anti Tank Rifle models for life.
